Whittle W1 Jet engine
In 1930, Frank Whittle, a young Royal Air Force officer, patented his design for an aircraft engine in which a gas turbine provided a powerful propulsive jet. On 12th April 1937 Frank Whittle was the first person to successfully start and run a turbo jet engine — the Whittle engine was the beginning of the jet age.
Sir Frank Whittle made a major contribution to one of the great engineering developments of the century, and we mark the importance of his work with the issue of an exact replica of the Whittle W1 Jet engine. This all metal model was constructed from photos and measurements taken of the actual engine which powered the first Gloster/Whittle E28/39 on its maiden flight on 15th May 1941. (This engine is now on display at the Science Museum in London.)
